A Celebration of Legacy: Onyeocha Honours Late Mother with Grand Farewell in Orlu
It was a poignant blend of grief, gratitude and celebration on Friday, December 19, 2025, as the Imo State Commissioner for Sports Development, Honourable Obinna Onyeocha, gave his beloved mother, Lolo Ezinne Emilia Akueze Onyeocha (née Ekezie), a befitting and memorable farewell in her ancestral home of Umutanze, Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State.
The final rites began on a solemn note with a Requiem Mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Umutanze, where emotions ran high as family members, friends and well-wishers gathered in deep reflection to pray for the peaceful repose of a woman widely described as a devoted mother, community pillar and moral compass. The church service was marked by heartfelt tributes, soulful hymns and moving homilies that celebrated a life of humility, service and enduring values.
From the church, the funeral cortege moved to Central School, Umutanze, which had been transformed into a vibrant arena for a grand reception. Traditional music, cultural displays and warm interactions gave the occasion a celebratory tone, underscoring the Igbo belief that a well-lived life deserves to be celebrated even in death.
The burial attracted an impressive array of dignitaries and stakeholders from across Imo State and beyond, all united in solidarity with the Onyeocha family. Their presence not only spoke volumes about the respect enjoyed by Honourable Obinna Onyeocha, but also reflected the profound influence and goodwill associated with his family name.
Adding a strong humanitarian touch to the event, the Commissioner used the occasion to empower women from the host community with bags of rice and other food items, a gesture that drew loud applause and gratitude from beneficiaries and guests alike. Many described the act as a reflection of the late matriarch’s spirit of generosity and compassion.
Among the dignitaries who graced the ceremony were the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Lady Chinyere Ekomaru; the Commissioner for Education, Honourable Johncliff Nwadike; the Commissioner for Youths, Honourable Emeka Mandela Ukaegbu; the Special Adviser to the Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Honourable Willie Okoliegwo; and Prince Emeka Nwankwo, CEO of Game On Afrika, Enyimba FC Chairman and corker CAF Player of the Year, Nwankwo Kanu, All Progressives Congress chieftain, Marcelinus Nlemigbo among several others.
The sports family, in particular, turned out in full force to honour one of their own. Members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Imo State Chapter, led by Cosmos Chukwuemeka, were present alongside officials of the Imo State Sports Council, led by Lady Justina Akpolu; the Imo State Football Association, headed by Barrister Ifeanyi Dike; as well as players and officials of Heartland Queens Football Club, Heartland FC and other key stakeholders in the sports sector.
In all, the grand burial ceremony stood as a testament to a life well spent and a legacy well preserved. As songs faded and guests departed, one message resonated clearly: Lolo Ezinne Emilia Akueze Onyeocha lived a fulfilled life, raised a son who continues to impact society, and departed to eternal rest amid honour, dignity and love.
