Anambra FA Chairman Pays Tribute to Late Super Eagles Coach Onigbinde
The Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA), Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi, has also expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Super Eagles coach, Chief Festus Adegboye Onigbinde, describing his passing as a huge blow to Nigerian football.
In a condolence message made available to journalists, Iloenyosi said the late tactician left an enduring legacy in the development of the game in Nigeria, noting that his commitment and achievements would continue to inspire generations.
“We have lost one of the great pillars of Nigerian football. Coach Onigbinde’s dedication, knowledge of the game and leadership qualities made him a respected figure both locally and internationally,” Iloenyosi said.
The ANSFA Chairman highlighted the late coach’s remarkable career, including leading the Super Eagles to the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan and guiding Nigeria to a silver medal finish at the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations.
He also acknowledged Onigbinde’s impact at the club level, where he led Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan to a silver medal finish in the 1984 African Club Champions Cup.
According to Iloenyosi, beyond the trophies and achievements, the late Modakeke High Chief played a vital role in shaping Nigerian football through mentorship and inspiration to players and coaches.
He prayed for the peaceful repose of the late coach’s soul and extended condolences to his family, friends and the entire Nigerian football community.
“May Almighty God grant him eternal rest and give his family and the football fraternity the strength to bear this great loss,” Iloenyosi added.
