Basketball stakeholders across Nigeria have brushed aside recent criticisms directed at the leadership of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), describing them as a calculated and self-serving effort by a long-serving board member to undermine the lawful tenure of the current board for personal gain.
According to multiple stakeholders familiar with developments within the federation, the sustained attacks—often marked by misinformation, public outbursts, and repeated media interventions—are aimed at creating instability and forcing an early end to the present administration. They contend that the ultimate objective is to position certain interests to benefit from Nigeria’s participation at the Women’s Basketball World Cup scheduled for August, rather than advance the long-term growth of the sport.
Observers argue that the unfolding situation follows a familiar pattern. Over several decades, the same veteran board member has reportedly been at loggerheads with successive NBBF leaderships, routinely opposing sitting presidents whenever influence or control appeared diminished. Stakeholders insist the current campaign mirrors this long history of conflict and resistance to institutional authority.
Tensions are said to have intensified following internal board restructuring, including the removal of the individual from a strategic technical role. Stakeholders maintain that the decision was driven by the need for professionalism, transparency, and institutional reform. What began as internal disagreement has since escalated into open hostility, media offensives, and sustained attempts to delegitimise the board’s constitutional mandate.
Stakeholders have also expressed concern over what they describe as an alarming expansion of the attacks beyond the federation’s leadership. Journalists and media practitioners who refuse to echo the disputed narrative have allegedly been subjected to harassment, intimidation, and public disparagement. This development, they warn, poses a serious threat to press freedom and the democratic values that should underpin sports administration.
Emphasising that media independence must be respected, stakeholders cautioned against using journalists and media platforms as instruments for personal vendettas or power struggles. Such actions, they argue, damage the credibility of Nigerian basketball and weaken public confidence in the sport’s governance.
At the centre of the controversy, stakeholders insist, is a clear and non-negotiable fact: the tenure of the current NBBF board is constitutional, lawful, and sacrosanct. Any attempt to distort tenure timelines, sow confusion, or force an early exit through public pressure is viewed as an abuse of process and a direct threat to institutional stability.
They further warned that personal ambition must not be allowed to overshadow national interest, particularly at a time when Nigerian basketball continues to command global attention and prepares for major international competitions.
According to them, priority should remain on athlete welfare, technical development, and sustainable progress, rather than internal discord driven by individual agendas.
Stakeholders have therefore urged all parties to exercise restraint, respect constitutional order, and place the future of Nigerian basketball above personal grievances. As one insider noted, “No individual is bigger than the institution. The truth remains sacrosanct, and history has a way of revealing every agenda.”
