Akwa Ibom Boxer Eyes Gold After Gritty Quarterfinal Victory
Naomi Alexander of Akwa Ibom delivered a determined and spirited performance to secure her place in the semi-finals of the Women’s 60kg boxing event at the ongoing 2nd Niger Delta Games after her victory on Sunday February 22nd, 2026.
The rising boxer had to dig deep to overcome a resilient Somtochukwu Njoku of Abia in a fiercely contested bout that tested her strength, endurance and tactical awareness which she won through a split decision.
From the opening bell, both fighters displayed aggression and technical brilliance, but it was Naomi’s relentless drive and calculated combinations that ultimately sealed her victory. Her opponent proved a formidable challenge, forcing the Akwa Ibom athlete to raise her intensity and remain composed under pressure.
Speaking after the fight, an elated Naomi expressed gratitude and determination. “I’m so happy and grateful to God for the opportunity. I had to do everything possible to win because even my opponent fought like a man,” she said passionately.
Competing in her first major event while representing her state, the young boxer made it clear that she is not just satisfied with reaching the semi-finals. “I am delighted to be here to represent my state in my first competition. I have come to win the gold medal,” she declared confidently.
