Rivers United Star Samuel Wisdom Reflects on Busy Season, CAF Lessons
Rivers United midfielder Samuel Wisdom has reflected on his recent performances and the demanding schedule the club has faced this season, expressing gratitude despite the challenges of balancing domestic and continental commitments.
The Pride of Rivers have had to juggle Nigeria Premier Football League fixtures alongside their campaign in the CAF Champions League, a situation Wisdom admits has tested the squad physically and mentally.
“It’s been tough,” Wisdom admitted. “You can see how hard we’ve fought, having to play CAF matches and league games as well, so it’s been tough, but I’m grateful.”
Despite the packed schedule, the midfielder has remained consistent with his approach to the game, insisting that his style and mindset have not changed even as he continues to contribute to the team.
“My game has always been my game. Nothing has changed. It’s still the same me and the same style,” he said.
Wisdom also praised the impact of head coach Finidi George, highlighting the former Super Eagles winger’s player-friendly approach as a key factor in the team’s performances.
“Coach Finidi George is someone who wants players to be happy so they can perform. His relationship with the players goes a long way and it reflects on the pitch as well,” Wisdom explained. “He has given me the freedom to do what I can do.”
The midfielder further acknowledged the intense expectations that come with representing Rivers United, describing the club as one that demands excellence from its players.
“Rivers United is a big team. The demand here is high and the mentality is different even with the players,” he noted. “It’s a challenging environment for any player. When you’re here, you’ll always want to give your best because you don’t want to be left out.”
Reflecting on the team’s CAF Champions League campaign, Wisdom described their exit as a learning experience for the squad.
“It was just a bad outing for us in the CAF Champions League. We’ve learnt our lessons and we’ll improve on it,” he added.
Looking ahead, the midfielder insists the team remains focused on accumulating as many points as possible in the league.
“We’ll take it one game at a time. We just want to gather as many points as we can, so we’ll definitely be putting our all into each game to achieve our aim.”
Wisdom has been a regular feature for Rivers United this season, making 19 appearances across all competitions with six in the CAF Champions League and 13 in the league, scoring three goals in the NPFL so far.
The ball joggler is expected to help the Pride of Rivers secure a positive result in Abeokuta today as they confront Shooting Stars in a rescheduled game.
