Green House Dominates as Dalton’s Montessori Academy Hosts Colourful Inter-House Sports in Owerri
The historic Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri came alive with colour, excitement and healthy competition on Friday, March 20, 2026, as Dalton’s Montessori Academy, Owerri staged the second edition of its Inter-House Sports in grand style.
The biennial event drew a vibrant crowd of pupils, parents, teachers and invited guests, all treated to a rich blend of sporting contests, entertainment and community bonding that underlined the school’s commitment to holistic education.
A Festival of Sports and Family Bonding
Unlike the maiden edition in 2023 which focused mainly on pupils, this year’s event took a more inclusive turn, integrating parents and teachers into the activities. The atmosphere was carnival-like from the outset, with a colourful parade and match past by the four houses: Green, Red, Yellow and Blue setting the tone for a memorable outing.
The competition segment featured a wide range of track and fun events. Pupils competed in 50 metres intermediate races for boys and girls, as well as 100 metres races for senior categories. Parents were not left out, taking to the tracks in the 100 metres races for men and women, drawing cheers from the stands.
Novelty events such as Run to Mama, Egg Race, Peg Race, Mama’s Slippers and Bicycle Race among others added humour and excitement, while relay races involving pupils and parents showcased teamwork and coordination. The event was further spiced with captivating choreography and calisthenics displays, reflecting the pupils’ discipline and creative training.
Medal Table Drama
After an intense day of competition, Green House emerged champions, topping the medal table with an impressive haul of 7 gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze medals.
Red House maintained their consistency by finishing second once again with 6 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze medals, just as they did in the inaugural edition.
Yellow House followed in third place with 4 gold, 7 silver and 3 bronze medals, while Blue House, winners of the first edition, settled for fourth place with 2 gold, 4 silver and 7 bronze medals.
Directress Highlights Vision of Holistic Development
Speaking after the event, the Directress of the school, Deaconess Ngozi Obasi, emphasized that the expanded format was deliberate, aimed at strengthening family values and nurturing all-round development in pupils.
She noted that involving parents created a unique bond and served as motivation for the children. According to her, the event goes beyond competition, focusing on discovering hidden talents and providing real-life experiences outside the classroom.
Obasi stressed that extracurricular activities remain central to the school’s philosophy of raising a “whole child,” adding that the second edition introduced new innovations and improvements over the first.
She revealed that the Inter-House Sports is now a biennial programme and assured that future editions would feature even more sporting activities and broader participation. She also acknowledged the sacrifices and commitment of parents, staff and pupils who rehearsed tirelessly to ensure the success of the event.
In a reflective note, she underscored the core message of the day: that everyone is a winner, and that life is more about striving for excellence and achieving goals than mere competition.
Head Teacher Applauds Inclusiveness and Impact
The Head Teacher, Mrs Charity Emere, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the positive impact of the event on pupils.
She pointed out that the inclusion of parents and teachers significantly enhanced the experience compared to the first edition, making it more engaging and memorable for the children.
According to her, the pupils eagerly anticipated the stadium experience, which added excitement to their learning journey.
Emere emphasized that the school intentionally reduced the competitive intensity to allow participants to focus on enjoyment and participation. She reiterated that education extends beyond classroom walls, noting that initiatives like the Inter-House Sports are vital for developing physical fitness, social skills and teamwork.
She also stressed the importance of instilling in children the value of exercise and active participation in sports as part of their overall growth.
