Imo SWAN Pushes Ethical AI Reporting at Media Workshop in Owerri
The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Imo State chapter, has organised a capacity-building workshop focused on the responsible use of artificial intelligence in modern journalism, with emphasis on ethics, professionalism, and credibility in sports reporting.
The training, themed “Ethics and Professionalism in the Generative AI Era,” was held at the OtownGist Media and Creative Hub in Owerri on Tuesday May 12th, 2026 as part of SWAN, Imo May, 2026 Congress and brought together sports journalists seeking to understand the growing influence of AI in newsroom operations and digital storytelling.
Under the leadership of Imo SWAN Chairman, Cosmos Chukwuemeka, the workshop explored how emerging technologies are changing the media landscape and why journalists must adapt without abandoning the core principles of accuracy, originality, and responsible reporting.
Media entrepreneur and founder of OtownGist Media and Creative Hub, Chinedu Hardy Nwadike, who served as facilitator, introduced participants to several AI-powered tools designed to support match reporting, interview transcription, content development, newsroom automation, and online content distribution.
The practical session featured live demonstrations on how artificial intelligence can improve productivity and speed in newsrooms while helping journalists meet the demands of the fast-changing digital media environment.
Participants were also exposed to strategies for integrating AI into daily reporting workflows without compromising editorial quality.
Nwadike repeatedly stressed that artificial intelligence should remain a support tool rather than a replacement for human judgment and professional ethics.
Journalists were encouraged to prioritise verification, fact-checking, and credibility in all AI-assisted reports as Imo SWAN continues efforts to prepare members for the future of sports journalism.
